The family moved to Noble County Indiana in August of 1968 and spent the next seventeen years in various Indiana communities. Lori was graduated from Switzerland County High School as Co-Valedictorian. She was graduated in May 1989, from Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology. While attending Franklin, she was an active member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority Her ‘Tri Delts’ were a source of support and comfort throughout her life.
Lori was employed as a chemist in various science laboratories in Indiana; however, she discovered her love for teaching at Burris High School in Muncie, Indiana.
The two high points in Lori’s life were the birth of her son, Casey, and her daughter, Allison. Lori was a devoted mother attending most sporting events her children participated in. She spent countless hours cheering them on in many levels of soccer, football, baseball, volleyball, and softball. She was proud of the collegiate play of Casey in football at Central Methodist University, and Ally in softball at John A. Logan College. She was even more proud of their academic achievements and their career goals in the medical field.
In the summer of 2006, the family moved to Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Lori received a Missouri Teaching Certificate and began teaching science classes at Bloomfield High School. Her BHS students became an extended family, giving them her love, guidance, and knowledge even in her last days. She persevered for five plus years after her cancer diagnosis—still working and cheering on her children and her students when most others would have given up. She was grateful for the support of her Table 9 Group of the Journey Program at LaCroix United Methodist Church, her many faithful friends, colleagues, students, family and children. Lori fought hard as she faced adversity in her battle with cancer. Her strength and courage was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Lori is survived by her children, Casey and Allison Vaughn of Cape Girardeau; by her mother, Shelby Allison of Florence, Indiana; by her sister Tammy and husband Sam Honeycutt and sons of Greenwood, Indiana; by her aunts Marcia Huff of Ocean Springs, Mississippi and Carol Mearkle of Crystal, Minnesota; and by her best friends Dana McClard and Lori Sheehan of Cape Girardeau and Ann Bye of Bloomfield; and by her faithful canine companion, Kami.
As hard as Lori fought cancer, she has fought equally as hard for her children. Her love and pride for them transcends space and time. They are her greatest blessing. She is watching down over us all and trying hard to help us in any way that she can.
A Celebration of Lori’s life will be held at Cape LaCroix Church at 3102 Lexington Avenue on Saturday, September 7 at 1:00 pm.
