Vernon Hopkins Jr. passed away on October 18, 2019 at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on June 26th, 1932 to Meredith Ralston Hopkins and R Vernon Hopkins Sr., in Bloomfield MO.
Vernon graduated from Gray Ridge High School in 1950, after graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and completed the Sonarman 1st Class Course at the US Fleet Academy in San Diego in Nov 1951.
He was assigned to the USS Bradford and served during the Korean War was and honorably discharged in March 1955.
Vernon was accepted to Recruit Training School for the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop E in September 1955, promoted to Sergeant in 1969 and he retired as Lieutenant in June 1987.
Vernon was a 32nd degree Mason, an avid hunter, fisherman, an accomplished flintknapper and a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Matthews Hopkins; daughters, Ramona Hopkins, Rebecca (John) Gooch, Amanda (Dean) Lynn, Rachel Lyscas; stepsons Barry (Cheryl) Matthews Brett (Elaine) Matthews, grandchildren Adam and Matthew Bollinger, both of Santa Fe, Sarah Hopkins; step-grandchildren Elizabeth Roberts, Joe and Grant Matthews, 4 Great grandchildren and numerous extended family members
He was preceded in death by wife Mary Helen Hopkins, father, R Vernon Hopkins Sr, Mother Meredith Bange, brothers John Kenneth, Robert Fowler and his best brother and friend, David.
A very special thank you to the staff at Auburn Creek Assisted Living for the wonderful, loving care they provided to him over the last several years. Family would also like to thank the Lutheran Home and Crown Hospice for their help during this difficult time.

Graveside service will be held at the Veterans Cemetery, in Bloomfield MO. Wednesday October 23rd at 10 am. Liley Funeral Homes was in-charge of arrangements.
